Recommended barcoding gene: rDNA ITS. Genus of bipolar yeasts with annellidic budding from the poles of somewhat saturnoid cells. The ascospores are hat-shaped or rough-walled with an equatorial ledge and are reluctantly liberated. Pseudohyphae are mostly absent.
Generic type species: Hanseniaspora valbyensis Klöcker (1912). The genus name is protected over the older asexual genus Kloeckera (Kirk et al., 2013).
