Ascomycota, Pezizomycotina, Eurotiales, Aspergillaceae. Genus: ASPERGILLUS
Aspergillus hubkae Y.B. Zhou et al.
member of A. niger complex
Latest update: 29 September 2024
Colony characteristics
Colonies (CYA, 7 d, 25°C) flat, white, floccose, radially furrowed, producing hyaline exudate; margin entire. Conidial masses greenish black. Reverse cream-coloured.
Microscopy
Conidiophore stipes smooth-walled, hyaline, 500–1000 × 8–14 µm, biseriate. Vesicles spherical, 30–50 µm; metulae 20–50 × 4–7 µm; phialides flask-shaped, 7–10 × 2–4 µm; conidia (sub)spherical, 2.5–4.0 µm, brown, coarsely roughened to echinulate, with low longitudinal ridges. Sclerotia absent. Sexual state unknown.
Differential diagnostics
Aspergillus hubkae is phylogenetically very close to A. brasiliensis, but differs by a bright yellow versus cream-coloured colony reverse on CYA, and by some small morphological and physiological features.
Pathogenicity
RG-1, BSL-1. The species was isolated from a BAL of a human patient with pulmonary aspergillosis (Zhou et al., 2024), but as yet no case report has been published.
Species complex
Clinically relevant members of the A. niger series are: A. awamori, A. brasiliensis, A. hubkae, A. niger and A. tubingensis.
