Colony characteristics

Colonies (SGA, 3 d, 30°C) growing rapidly, flat, membra nous, smooth, waxy, later becoming pow dery and developed radiate folds.

Microscopy

Hyphae hyaline, broad, with few scattered septa and rather thick walls. Chlamydospores spherical, dark, thick-walled; zygospores present.

Pathogenicity

RG-1, BSL-2. Dworzack et al. (1978) reported an infection of the palatum in a hyperglycemic male. Additional cases have been listed under B. ranarum.

Species complex

Clinically relevant members of the B. ranarum complex are: B. haptosporus, B. meristosporus, B. omanensis and B. ranarum.
