Bipolaris cynodontis

Ascomycota, Pezizomycotina, Pleosporales, Pleosporaceae. Genus: BIPOLARIS

Bipolaris cynodontis (Marignoni) Shoemaker

Latest update: 23 July 2024

Colony characteristics

Colonies (SGA, 10 d, 28°C) with limited expansion, woolly, initially whitish grey, becoming greyish black at maturity; reverse black.

Microscopy

Hyphae pale brown, Conidiophores erect, simple or branched, 100-300 µm high, 3.5-4.5 µm at the base, septate, brown, geniculate with flat, dark scars in the distal part resulting from sympodial conidium production. Conidia 20-50 × 7.5-9.5 µm, smooth, straight or slightly curved, broadly ellipsoidal, pale to olivaceous brown, with 3-5 distosepta and flat basal scar. Conidium germination bipolar. Heterothallic.

Pathogenicity

RG-1, BSL-1. Plant pathogen on Cynodon grass. Sharma & Nonzom (2021) described a superficial pedal infection. Nath et al. (2015) described a chromoblastomycosis-like case that was ascribed to B. cynodontis and Cladosporium cladosporioides; etiology is however uncertain.
