Terminology used in this Atlas is explained below. The reader is also referred to the Dictionary of the Fungi (Hawksworth et al., 1995). For descriptive terms in morphology, the Illustrated Dictionary of Mycology (Ulloa & Hanlin, 2000) is recommended. Diagram of used shape terminology

Glossary – I

immersed – partly below the surface of the growth medium, upper part remaining exposed.

infection – multiplication of a fungus in viable tissue.

integrated – incorporated in the main axis of a conidiophore.

intercalary – incorporated in a mycelial filament, in between hyphal cells.

invasion – penetration into living host tissue.

isogamic – copulation of two morphologically indistinguishable cells.

isthmoid – with a constriction.
