Rhodosporidiobolus

Basidiomycota, Pucciniomycotina, Sporidiobolales, Sporidiobolaceae. Genus: RHODOSPORIDIOBOLUS

Colonies pink or reddish, butyrous. Budding cells spherical to ellipsoidal; bud scars narrow. Ballistoconidia may be present. Hyphal elements occasionally produced. Sexual reproduction, if present, produced on short hyphae with clamp connections, leading to teliospores on transversely septate basidia.

Recommended barcoding gene: rDNA ITS. Small genus close to Rhodotorula and Sporobobolomyces and not distinguishable with phenotypic parameters, separated on phylogenetic grounds (Wang et al., 2015).

Generic type species: Sporobolomyces nylandii Takashima & Nakase (2000) ≡ Rhodosporidiobolus nylandii (Takashima & Nakase) Q.M. Wang et al. (2015); type strain: CBS 9093 = JCM 10213.
