Basidiomycota, Agaricomycotina, Trichosporonales, Trichosporonaceae. Genus: TRICHOSPORON
Trichosporon austroamericanum Francisco et al.
Latest update: 29 September 2024
Colony characteristics
Colonies (YPGA, 1 wk, 25°C) with restricted growth, cream to beige, membranous, rough to cerebriform at the centre, somewhat fissured near the margin.
Microscopy
True hyphae abundant, septate every 20-30 μm, 1.0-2.5 μm wide, producing spherical to ellipsoidal conidia measuring 2–4 × 1.5–3.0 μm; hyphae often disarticulating into separate cells. Appressoria absent in slide cultures.
Differential diagnosis
The species is close to T. inkin but differs by growth at 45°C, no growth with succinate and citrate, and no growth in the presence of 50% glucose.
Pathogenicity
RG-1, BSL-1. Fungus repeatedly isolated from clinical specimens and mentioned to cause white piedra on human hair (Francisco et al., 2024), but as yet no case report has been published.
