Chondrostereum purpureum (Pers.) Pouzar

Description in vivo

Fungus forming a crust on several species of deciduous wood, gradually developing multiple layers of undulated, shelf-like fruitbodies up to about 3 cm broad, with a tough, rubbery texture. Fruitbodies initially greyish white, edges and fertile lower surfaces becoming vivid violet, upper surfaces grey, becoming darker near the centre, covered with whitish hairs. Fruitbodies drying out and becoming brittle, beige to drab brown or beige after some weeks. Basidiospores cylindrical, 8 x 3–4 µm. Hyphae monomitic with clamp connections. Infected wood developing dark stains.

Pathogenicity

RG-1, BSL-1. Plant pathogen, affecting a variety of deciduous trees, especially Prunus. Dutta & Ray (2023) reported the fungus from a paratracheal abscess in an immunocompetent patient.
