dematiaceous – pigmented in olivaceous or brown colours.

denticle – toothlike conidiumbearing projection.

dermatomycosis – cutaneous infection of hair, skin or nails.

dermatophyte – fungus classified in Epidermophyton, Microsporum or Trichophyton.

dermatophytosis – cutaneous infection by a dermatophyte.

dextrioid – staining yellowishbrown with Melzer’s iodine.

dichotomous – forked, with two symmetrical branches.

diffluent – breaking up in water.

diminutive – smaller in length or width than the usual.

dimorphic – displaying two morphological types, one environmental and one invasive.

diploid – containing a double set of chromosomes.

disarticulation – falling apart into separate cells.

discrete – separate; in morphology: singlecelled; in taxonomy: clearly delimited group.

disease – damage to host tissue resulting from fungal growth.

disjunctor – structure between conidia to promote their disarticulation.

disseminated mycosis – fungal growth in various deep organ tissues located at some distance from each other.

distoseptate – conidia subdivided by inner wall layer only.

doliiform – barrelshaped, ellipsoidal with flattened poles.

dolipore – septal pore of Basidiomycota in which the walls of the pore canal are variously inflated.

dorsiventral – direction from upper side towards lower side.

downy – covered with short aerial hyphae.

dyspnea – difficulty in breathing.
