Colony characteristics

Colonies (YMA, 3 d, 25°C, butyrous, white to cream colored, glistening.

Microscopy

Budding cells ellipsoidal to elongate, sometimes curved, 4-14 × 2-4 μm, single, in pairs or in small groups. Pseudomycelium absent. Homothallic. Asci arising directly from budding cells, containing 1-4 spherical to ellipsoidal ascospores with, thick, smooth walls. Spores agglutinating after liberation.

Pathogenicity

RG-2, BSL-1. The species is found in cactus plants. Zamora et al. (2015), Anoop et al. (2011), Chan et al. (2013) and Kingston et al. (2024) reported on septic, potentially fatal fungemia, all in patients with AML as underlying disease.
